NATO Deputy Secretary General begins visit to Washington, D.C.
NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana began a working visit to Washington, D.C. on Thursday (6 February 2020), meeting with Vice President Mike Pence.
While in Washington, Ambassador Geoana is also meeting with a number of other senior officials, including Deputy National Security Adviser Matt Pottinger, Deputy Secretary of State Steve Beigun, Undersecretary of Defense for Policy John Rood, and members of the US Congress.
In his meetings, the Deputy Secretary General welcomed the strong trend toward fairer burden-sharing across the Alliance, with five consecutive years of rising defence spending across European Allies and Canada. He also stressed the importance of NATO’s training efforts in Afghanistan and Iraq, which are helping local forces to suppress international terrorism.
On Friday, the Deputy Secretary General will deliver remarks and take questions at the Hudson Institute, in a public event titled “NATO and the New Decade: Assessing the Transatlantic Alliance”.
