NATO Secretary General underlines need for strong deterrence and defence

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg participates in the first of four Strategic Concept seminars. The first Strategic Concept seminar focuses on “Deterrence and Defence in the XXI century”. The Seminar is co-hosted by the United Kingdom, Poland and Portugal

In an age of strategic competition, when the rules-based international order is under pressure, NATO Allies need strong deterrence and defence to maintain our free and open societies, Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told a seminar on the future of the NATO Alliance on Monday (13 December).

To keep our people safe in today’s unpredictable world, we must continue to strengthen and modernise our deterrence and defence. To do this, three things are key: strong, capable forces; robust, resilient societies; and a global perspective.” the Secretary General said.

This seminar, hosted by the United Kingdom and co-hosted by Poland and Portugal, is the first of four seminars on the development of NATO’s next Strategic Concept. Each seminar brings together NATO’s civilian and military leadership with officials from Allied capitals, think-tanks and academia. These seminars will inform the development of NATO’s next Strategic Concept that will be adopted at the Madrid Summit next year.
