Allied fighter jets intercept Russian aircraft
Fighter jets from several NATO countries scrambled on Wednesday (11 March 2020) to intercept Russian military aircraft off the western coasts of Scotland and Ireland and over the Gulf of Biscay.
The two Russian Tu-142 Bear aircraft – used as bombers and maritime patrol planes – were shadowed for several hours by jets from the UK, France, Spain and Norway.
NATO protects allied airspace 24/7. “We are vigilant and we will continue to monitor all air activity near the alliance’s borders” said NATO spokesperson Oana Lungescu.
