NATO Secretary General highlights Italy’s major contributions to Euro-Atlantic security

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg met with the Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte in Rome on Wednesday (9 October 2019). Mr. Stoltenberg and Mr. Conte discussed preparations for the NATO leaders’ meeting in London this December, the fight against terrorism, the situation in Syria, Italy’s role in NATO, NATO’s response to the challenges posed by the refugee and migrant crisis, and the Alliance’s continued progress toward fairer burden-sharing.

The Secretary General praised Italy for its continued contributions to Euro-Atlantic security. These include, amongst others, troop deployments with NATO-led missions in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Kosovo and deterrence efforts in Latvia and Romania, as well as support to NATO-led air policing missions in Iceland and Montenegro. They also include efforts to strengthen the defence capabilities of southern partners, the ongoing work of NATO’s Joint Force Command based in Naples to deal with regional threats and the hosting of NATO’s surveillance drones, which will soon be stationed in Sicily.

During his visit to Italy, Mr. Stoltenberg is also meeting with Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio.
