Speech NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at the NATO Parliametary Assembly Plenary session

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg outlined the key challenges and opportunities facing the Alliance in a keynote speech to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly in London on Monday (14 October 2019).

Ahead of the meeting of NATO Leaders in London at the end of the year, the Secretary General discussed the importance of transatlantic strength and unity in tackling today’s security challenges with parliamentarians representing NATO Allies and Partners.

Mr Stoltenberg focused on NATO’s role in: creating the conditions for lasting peace in Afghanistan; supporting effective arms control following Russia’s violation of the Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces Treaty; and adapting to emerging and disruptive technologies.

In his speech, Mr. Stoltenberg underlined the positive progress on increased defence spending over the last five years. “Our security is the foundation for everything else. We cannot take it for granted, especially as our world becomes more unpredictable and as our challenges grow,” he said.

The Secretary General thanked NATO parliamentarians for their ongoing support and expertise, and praised the UK’s longstanding commitment and contributions to NATO. While in London, Mr Stoltenberg will meet UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, and Defence Secretary Ben Wallace.
