NATO Secretary General and Prime Minister of Iceland discuss Russia’s attack on Ukraine

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg met Prime Minister of Iceland Ms. Katrín Jakobsdóttir in Brussels for talks that centred on Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.
The Secretary General commended Prime Minister Jakobsdóttir for Iceland’s support for Ukraine. “We are grateful for the contributions you are making towards our shared security. Both when it comes to providing support to Ukraine but also implementing sanctions and also closing the Icelandic airspace”, he said.
Iceland also contributes to NATO’s defence and deterrence posture by hosting a NATO Air Policing mission which secures the airspace in the Atlantic and the High North, and by deploying a civilian expert to the UK-led battlegroup in Estonia.
Secretary General Stoltenberg and Prime Minister Jakobsdóttir also discussed the road to the June NATO Summit, where NATO leaders will endorse the new Strategic Concept. This keystone document will outline fundamental security tasks for the Alliance as well as challenges and opportunities it faces in a changing security environment. The Secretary General praised Iceland for its very strong commitment to NATO’s core values. Iceland is “helping to bind North America and Europe together”, the Secretary General highlighted.
